Woo-hoo! First Ever Post in Our Art Blog! Letterboxing

We were introduced to Letterboxing a couple of days ago and we fell in love with the activity!  We have been Geocachers for about 6 years or so and Letterboxing is right up our ally!

To participate in Letterboxing, it is not necessary to hand carve your own stamp, but it makes it more personable.  Following the simple kids instructions found on the Letterboxing site, James and Nickolas carved their very first stamps.  Each boy chose their design from something in their mind (I had planned to give them some printed options, but didn't need to).  Nickolas loves fish and loved the idea of a cross inside the Christian fish icon.  James chose to use a letter "N" to represent his nickname: Nibbs.

Nick's Handcrafted Stamp
I helped Nick to get his idea drawn onto the artgum eraser we bought at Hobby Lobby, mostly because it was both our first attempts and we were learning.  However, using my leather hole punch sets, he carved the whole thing himself.

James' Handcrafted letter N

James drew his own design and carved the whole thing himself.  While the design isn't exactly what he had drawn ( a slip of the tool took off a curly q at one end of his N), it is pretty darn close. I was impressed that he'd drawn such a beautiful N free hand.
